Chains(1989)
We leave no traces, but we live in memory and in the nightmares of our enemies.
Chains is a crime thriller that traps four affluent urbanites in a nightmare of mistaken identity and gang violence. Driving through Chicago's South Side en route to a jazz club, the couples witness the execution of a local kingpin. As they attempt to flee, a wounded fugitive forces his way into their car—the very gunman the dead man's crew is hunting. What unfolds is a tense cat-and-mouse game as the strangers navigate hostile territory, bound together by circumstance and desperation. The shooter claims self-defense, having killed in revenge for his brother's death, but the distinction means little to the vengeful gang closing in. Chains explores how ordinary people become entangled in urban violence and the moral ambiguities that emerge when survival trumps judgment.
