Douce(1943)

Douce is a 1887 Paris-set drama about a young aristocrat caught between love and social convention. Irène works as governess to the titular Douce, granddaughter of the Countess de Bonafé, who harbors a forbidden attraction to Fabien, the estate's charming manager. Their class divide makes marriage impossible. When Douce learns that Fabien plans to flee to Quebec with Irène—and that her widowed father, the Count, has proposed to the governess—she manipulates Fabien into eloping with her instead. The scheme unravels family bonds and social expectations, forcing each character to confront desire, duty, and the rigid hierarchies that govern their world.
