Two Lies(1990)
Two Lies is a black and white drama about identity, family secrets, and the gulf between generations. Doris Chu, a recently divorced Chinese American woman, undergoes plastic surgery to reshape her eyes—a decision her teenage daughter Mei interprets as a betrayal of their heritage. When the family retreats to a desert resort during Doris's recovery, long-buried tensions surface. What begins as a mother's attempt at reinvention becomes a crucible for painful truths. The film examines how immigrant families navigate competing notions of beauty, belonging, and authenticity, exploring what happens when a parent's choices collide with a child's sense of self. Poignant and unflinching, Two Lies captures the quiet anguish of feeling caught between two worlds.
