We(1982)

We is a 1924 Soviet science-fiction film set in a dystopian 26th century where individuality has been systematically erased. Citizens live in transparent glass houses under constant surveillance by the secret police, the Keepers, all wearing identical uniforms and addressed only by numbers. They consume synthetic food and march in rigid formation to state anthems broadcast through loudspeakers. The regime permits only one hour of privacy—"sexy time"—when residents may draw their curtains. The One State, ruled by an annually replaced leader called the Benefactor, operates on a chilling principle: happiness and freedom are fundamentally incompatible. Based on Yevgeny Zamyatin's influential 1921 novel, We presents a chilling vision of totalitarianism that predates Orwell's 1984 and remains a cornerstone of dystopian science fiction.
