Originally titled The Saturday Night Hollywood Palace, it debuted as a mid-season replacement for The Jerry Lewis Show. Staged at the former Hollywood Playhouse on Vine Street in Hollywood—renamed The Hollywood Palace for the show's run—it featured rotating celebrity hosts and musical performances. The series launched the career of Raquel Welch, who appeared in the first season as the "Billboard Girl," introducing each act on a placard.
