SEQALU: Formosa 1867(2021)

SEQALU: Formosa 1867 is a historical drama series set in 19th-century Taiwan. In March 1867, the American merchant ship Rover wrecks off the Hengchun Peninsula, sparking an international incident. Eighteen-year-old Tiap-moe, fluent in multiple languages, becomes a crucial interpreter for American Consul Charles Le Gendre as he investigates the disaster. Caught between competing interests—Western powers, indigenous Seqalu communities, and Han Chinese settlers—Tiap-moe navigates treacherous ethnic and gender politics. Questioned by her own people and pressured by outsiders, she must find a way to broker understanding among Westerners, Seqalus, Hokkiens, and Hakkas while discovering her own place in a fractured world.
