Matinee Theater is an American anthology series that aired on NBC from 1955 to 1958 during the Golden Age of Television. Broadcast live and daily in the afternoon, the show presented five different stage plays each week with minimal sets and props. Producer Albert McCleery pioneered a theatrical approach to television, drawing on his earlier work with Cameo Theatre, which introduced the concept of theater-in-the-round to the medium. The series employed five directors and five art directors working in rapid succession to stage fresh productions throughout the week. Matinee Theater was strategically scheduled around noon to promote color television to American housewives, blending live theatrical performance with innovative television production techniques that emphasized creative storytelling over elaborate scenery.
