The Newcomers(1977)

The Newcomers is a Canadian television series of seven hour-long specials that aired on CBC Television between 1977 and 1980. Sponsored by Imperial Oil to commemorate the company's centennial, the series examines Canada's identity as a nation shaped by immigration, tracing the country's story from its pre-Confederation era to the present day. Written by acclaimed authors Timothy Findley and Alice Munro, each special explores different waves of newcomers and their contributions to Canadian society. The opening theme was composed by Hagood Hardy. A French-language version, Les Arrivants, aired simultaneously on Radio-Canada, making the series accessible to both English and French-speaking audiences across the country.
