The Mayor of Casterbridge(2003)

The Mayor of Casterbridge is a period drama following Michael Henchard, a hay-trusser whose drunken decision to auction his wife and child at a country fair sets his fate in motion. Consumed by remorse, he swears off alcohol for eighteen years and rises to become the respected but unloved Mayor of Casterbridge. When his wife Susan and daughter Elizabeth Jane unexpectedly return to town, Henchard's carefully constructed life unravels. The reappearance forces him to confront the violent, selfish impulses that defined his youth and threatens everything he has built. As old secrets surface and relationships fracture, Henchard discovers that some sins cannot be simply outrun or forgotten.
