Rookie!(2001)

Rookie! is a Japanese series following Makoto Aida, a 23-year-old first-year detective who stumbled into the job almost by accident. After failing most civil service exams during Japan's recession, Makoto passes only the police academy entrance test. Assigned to a quiet rural posting in Okutama, he expects an easy career ahead. That changes when he inadvertently helps catch a suspect in a brutal crime, earning a commendation that fast-tracks him to detective work. Uncomfortable with confrontation and reluctant to wade into serious criminal cases, Makoto discovers his new role focuses on public safety rather than investigations. The series follows this good-natured but reluctant detective as he navigates the gap between his expectations and the demands of police work.
