The Complete and Utter History of Britain is a 1969 comedy sketch series created by Michael Palin and Terry Jones. The show imagines history as if television had existed throughout the ages, replaying pivotal moments as modern broadcasts. Sketches feature interviews with Battle of Hastings commanders in their dressing room, Samuel Pepys hosting a chat show, and an estate agent pitching Stonehenge to first-time homebuyers. Originally seven episodes were written and produced, but London Weekend Television merged the first two into a single instalment, resulting in a six-part series broadcast only in the London region. For decades the entire show was thought lost to the archive purge, though copies of the early episodes have since surfaced. Terry Jones later expressed reservations about the final product, citing pacing and sound issues.
