Ways across the Country is an East German television miniseries following Gertrud Habersaat, a young maid whose life is upended by war and displacement. After marrying and relocating from Mecklenburg to Poland in the early 1940s, Gertrud is forced to flee as a refugee during World War II, eventually returning to her homeland. The series traces her struggle to rebuild and find stability during the uncertain 1950s, capturing the personal cost of conflict on ordinary lives. Through Gertrud's journey across borders and decades, the miniseries explores themes of resilience, belonging, and the long shadow of war on postwar Europe.
