Home to Roost(1985)
Home to Roost is a British sitcom from the 1980s that follows Henry Willows, a contentedly single man in his forties whose peaceful London life is upended when his teenage son Matthew moves in after being kicked out by his mother. Written by Eric Chappell and starring John Thaw as Henry and Reece Dinsdale as Matthew, the series mines comedy from the clash between a man who's enjoyed seven years of solitude and an eighteen-year-old learning to navigate adulthood. Henry's irritation at his disrupted routine forms the heart of the show, as father and son navigate their unexpected domestic arrangement. The household also includes Henry's cleaners—first Enid Thompson, then Fiona Fennell in later seasons—who add further complications to his carefully ordered world. Yorkshire Television's sharp take on generational friction and reluctant domesticity made the show a standout of its era.
