A standout report titled "Smoke Screen" exposed how the cigarette industry manipulated nicotine levels during manufacturing—work that earned a George Polk Award but also triggered a lawsuit from Philip Morris, ultimately settled with an on-air apology from ABC. Day One also won a Peabody Award for its 1993 investigation "Scarred for Life," which examined the practice of female genital cutting.
