Die Wölfe(2009)

Die Wölfe is a three-part German documentary drama following five Berlin youths across four decades of upheaval. Beginning in 1948 amid rubble and black markets, childhood friends Kurt, Lotte, Jakob, Silke and Bernd navigate post-war hardship, rival gangs and first love. By the early 1960s, as Cold War tensions mount and refugees flee eastward, their bond fractures under the weight of political division. The friends drift apart, losing touch across years of separation. Only after the Berlin Wall falls in 1989 do they reunite, forced to confront whether their youthful oath—"Nothing can separate us, not even death"—still holds meaning. Die Wölfe weaves intimate personal stories with the seismic historical events that shaped a generation, exploring how friendship, love and betrayal endure against the backdrop of a divided nation.
