Get Cracking is a 1943 British comedy war film starring George Formby as Lance Corporal George Singleton, a Home Guard mechanic locked in a petty rivalry with fellow serviceman Ronald Shiner. When their competing Home Guard units are sent on battle manoeuvres, Singleton hatches a daring plan to steal a Vickers machine gun from the opposing unit. The raid goes spectacularly wrong, costing him his rank. Undeterred, Singleton and a young evacuee girl named Irene devise an audacious backup scheme: building their own tank from scratch. Directed by Marcel Varnel and shot during wartime, the film balances slapstick humour with the earnest spirit of the Home Guard, delivering laughs through Singleton's misadventures and the absurdity of his homemade military contraption.
