Hail the Conquering Hero is a 1944 comedy about a man discharged from the Marines for hayfever before seeing combat. Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith dreads returning home, ashamed of his failure to serve. When a group of Marines befriend him, they concoct an elaborate scheme: they'll pose as his unit and present him to his hometown as a wounded war hero with an honorable discharge. What begins as a well-meaning deception spirals into chaos as the entire town celebrates their supposed hero, forcing Truesmith to navigate the mounting lies and absurd consequences of his fabricated war record. The film is a sharp satire of small-town patriotism and the pressure to live up to impossible expectations.
