Man in the Attic(1953)
The Life...The Loves...The Crimes of Jack the Ripper!
Man in the Attic is a 1953 thriller set in Victorian London during the Jack the Ripper murders. A quiet lodger named Mr. Slade rents an attic room from the Harley family, claiming he needs space for pathological research. Mrs. Harley grows deeply suspicious of her strange tenant, convinced he may be the killer stalking the city. Her niece Lily, a cabaret performer, finds Slade charming and is drawn to him romantically. As the murders continue, tension builds between Lily's attraction and her aunt's mounting dread. The film plays on ambiguity: is Slade truly dangerous, or is Mrs. Harley's paranoia unfounded? Directed by Henry Hathaway and based on a 1935 French novel, the film builds psychological suspense through the claustrophobic confines of the Harley household, where attraction and fear collide against the backdrop of London's most infamous crime spree.
