Darkness Fell on Gotenhafen(1960)

Darkness Fell on Gotenhafen is a historical drama set during January 1945, when the Soviet Red Army's advance into eastern Germany forced millions of civilians to flee through the frozen winter. As Russian forces invaded East Prussia, desperate evacuees crowded into ships departing from Gotenhafen, the last open port in the region. The Wilhelm Gustloff, a former pleasure cruiser built to carry 1,000 passengers, became one of the final vessels to leave port—packed with approximately 10,000 refugees. The ship sank without warning, and only a handful of survivors emerged from the catastrophe. The film chronicles this maritime disaster and the human tragedy of wartime displacement, drawing from one of history's deadliest maritime disasters, largely forgotten outside Germany.
