An Invitation to the Hunt(1974)

An Invitation to the Hunt is a Claude Chabrol television film adapted from Georges Hitchcock's short story. A working-class man receives an unexpected invitation to the local marquis's annual hunt party and becomes convinced he's finally entered high society. Desperate to belong, he spirals into debt financing an elaborate fantasy life, inventing a false aristocratic past and adopting affected manners to match his imagined status. But the marquis and his circle have darker intentions. What begins as social climbing becomes a cruel game of humiliation and exposure, as Chabrol peels back the layers of delusion and class pretension to reveal the ruthlessness lurking beneath polite society's surface.
