Chunhyang is a Korean film that follows the chance meeting between Mongryong Lee, a nobleman's son, and Chunhyang, an intelligent young woman of mixed heritage whose mother was a courtesan. The two fall in love and dream of marriage, but their plans fracture when Mongryong departs for the capital to sit for the civil service exam. Left behind, Chunhyang faces unwanted advances from the corrupt and predatory Byun Hak-do, who exploits his power to pursue her. Caught between her heart and her circumstances, Chunhyang must navigate a rigid social hierarchy that threatens to tear the lovers apart. The film explores themes of class, desire, and resilience against a backdrop of Joseon-era Korea.
