Verdi's Simon Boccanegra is an operatic tragedy centered on a corsair and a nobleman's daughter whose secret love affair produces a child—now mysteriously vanished from foster care. When Boccanegra returns to Genoa to confess the truth to Maria, he discovers she has died. In a twist of fate, the grieving man is proclaimed Doge of Genoa by a crowd led by the plebeian Paolo Albiani, thrusting him into power at his moment of deepest loss. This performance was recorded at the Teatro di San Carlo in Turin on October 10th, 2017.
