The Tale of Tsar Saltan(1943)
The Tale of Tsar Saltan is a Russian fantasy film rooted in Pushkin's classic poem. When the youngest of three sisters marries Tsar Saltan, her jealous siblings arrange a cruel revenge: they seal the tsaritsa and her newborn son, Prince Gvidon, in a barrel and cast them into the sea. The ocean carries them to a remote island, Buyan, where the boy grows rapidly and encounters an enchanted swan fleeing a predatory kite. Grateful for his rescue, the swan builds a magnificent city for Gvidon to rule. Yet homesick for his father's court, Gvidon accepts the swan's magic: she transforms him into a mosquito, then a fly, allowing him to slip past the palace guards and torment his treacherous aunts. Between each visit home, the swan bestows wondrous gifts—a magical squirrel among them—keeping Gvidon tethered to his island kingdom while he yearns for reunion with his father.
