Disgusted by the violence and its consequences, Twain penned a searing indictment of warfare that his family, friends, and publisher all urged him to suppress, fearing it was too inflammatory for the era. Despite pressure to abandon the work entirely, Twain refused to destroy it. Instead, he made a defiant choice: the piece would remain unpublished during his lifetime, to be released only after his death.
