Transit(1991)
Transit is a 1941 drama following a group of desperate refugees trying to escape Nazi persecution. With the blitzkrieg closing in, their only hope lies in reaching Marseilles and securing an exit visa from the Vichy French government—a bureaucratic maze controlled by officials indifferent to their plight. Once approved, they might board neutral ships bound for safety. Based on Anna Seghers' novel, the film traces the intersecting fates of these hunted people as they navigate impossible choices, corrupt officials, and dwindling time. Each character carries their own secrets and reasons for flight, yet all depend on a system designed to keep them trapped. Transit captures the tension between survival and dignity during one of history's darkest chapters, when a single stamp on a document meant the difference between escape and catastrophe.
