Unpredictable Nature of the River(1996)

Nobleman Jean-François de la Plaine is exiled to a remote West African colony, where he must serve as governor. Stripped of his status and authority back home, he arrives in unfamiliar territory to impose order on a sprawling, chaotic settlement. The film follows his struggle to navigate colonial politics, local resistance, and the harsh realities of the African landscape. As de la Plaine attempts to consolidate power and fulfill his duties, he discovers that his European strategies and assumptions prove useless against the unpredictable forces—both human and natural—that govern the colony. Caught between his pride and survival, he must adapt or face ruin in a land that refuses to bend to his will.
