Faratyev's Fantasies(1982)
A funny and sad story of mismatched love, family and life surprises
Faratyev's Fantasies is a film adaptation of Alla Sokolova's play about a dreamer caught between desire and reality. Faratyev lives in a world of fantasies, surrounded by four women: Aleksandra, whom he loves desperately; her pragmatic mother; her sister Lyuba, who understands him but remains a child in his eyes; and her aunt, who believes his stories without encouraging them. When Aleksandra agrees to marry Faratyev for the sake of her family's security, their interconnected dreams begin to unravel. She is a realist unmoved by his passion, and soon abandons him to run away with the mysterious Bedhudov. The film explores how each character responds differently to the blurred boundary between fantasy and waking life, revealing the cost of living in dreams rather than accepting reality.
