Primary is a landmark 1960 documentary following the U.S. presidential primary race between John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. Groundbreaking for its time, the film pioneered lightweight camera equipment that allowed filmmakers to capture candidates in intimate, unguarded moments—a radical departure from the formal documentary style of the era. The camera becomes an active participant in the unfolding political drama, placing viewers directly into the heart of campaign strategy, personal tension, and the machinery of American politics. Primary established a new visual language for documentary cinema, influencing how political and observational films would be made for decades to come. The Academy Film Archive preserved the film in 1998 in partnership with The Film Foundation.
