U-Boat Wargamers is a historical drama following the true story of retired naval strategist Gilbert Roberts, who was tasked with combating Nazi Germany's devastating U-boat campaign in 1943. As Admiral Karl Dönitz's fleet destroys Allied merchant ships and threatens Britain's survival, the Royal Navy turns to an unconventional solution: war gaming. Unable to spare male personnel, Roberts assembles an unlikely team of women from the Women's Royal Navy Service, including chartered accountant Jean Laidlaw and brilliant female mathematicians. Together, they recreate naval battles on a linoleum floor using chalk and wooden model ships, attempting to predict and counter Dönitz's tactics. The series chronicles how these resourceful women helped turn the tide of the Atlantic, challenging military hierarchy and proving their strategic brilliance despite facing institutional resistance.
