Rene Goes to School(2022)

Rene Goes to School is a documentary series following Cameroon-born manga creator Rene as he visits classrooms across Japan. Rene's own work explores the cultural friction he experienced growing up between two worlds, drawing on his outsider perspective to craft compelling stories. Now he turns his lens outward, interviewing foreign children living in Japan to capture their unique struggles with displacement, identity, and belonging. Through these encounters, Rene transforms their candid accounts into manga narratives, bridging the gap between lived experience and visual storytelling. The series celebrates how art can give voice to those caught between cultures, while revealing the universal challenges faced by young people navigating life in an unfamiliar country.
