M/S Gustloff(2008)
M/S Gustloff is a two-part German television film about one of World War II's deadliest maritime disasters. On 30 January 1945, the Wilhelm Gustloff set sail from Danzig under Captain Hellmuth Kehding, carrying wounded soldiers and civilians fleeing the advancing Red Army. Minutes after leaving harbor, a Soviet submarine fired three torpedoes at the ship. The vessel sank in less than an hour, claiming thousands of lives in the freezing Baltic Sea. Director Joseph Vilsmaier reconstructs the final hours of the evacuation attempt, capturing both the chaos aboard and the human cost of war's closing chapter. The film balances intimate personal stories with the scale of the tragedy, examining how ordinary people faced extraordinary circumstances when survival hung in the balance.
