Erziehung vor Verdun is a German series following Werner Bertin, an intellectual soldier and writer sent to the Western Front during World War I. Stationed near Verdun in 1916–1917, Bertin witnesses the full brutality of industrial warfare. The horrors he encounters shatter his idealistic worldview and transform him from a dutiful academic into a disillusioned, defiant man.
