Die Schatzinsel(1966)

Die Schatzinsel is a six-part West German-French live-action adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure novel that reimagines the pirate tale as a 19th-century Western. Rather than faithfully following the source material, the series transposes the action to a Wild West setting complete with cowboys, frontier towns, and period firearms. Jim Hawkins, a young man, obtains a treasure map and sets sail for a remote island, but encounters the rugged dangers of the American frontier instead of the high seas. The blend of swashbuckling adventure with Euro-Western conventions creates a stylised, genre-bending take on a beloved story. The result is an unconventional reimagining that prioritises atmosphere and spectacle over narrative fidelity.
