Heiji, the Detective(1966)

Heiji, the Detective is a period drama set in the Edo era, following the exploits of Zenigata Heiji, an incorruptible plainclothes detective devoted to protecting the peace. Despising bribery and corruption, Heiji lives in poverty, often struggling to pay rent for months on end. His steadfast principles cost him dearly, but he's buoyed by his loyal circle: his old friend Hachigoro, whose humor lightens the burden, and his beloved wife O-Shizu. O-Shizu anchors Heiji's world, sending him off with ritual purifications for good luck and offering quiet support through his hardships. Driven by his love for her, Heiji attempts to curb his reckless coin-tossing habits and live more frugally, though his dedication to justice always comes first. The series balances Heiji's gritty detective work with warmth and comedy drawn from his relationships.
