The North Water is a dark historical series following Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who joins a whaling expedition to the Arctic as ship's doctor, hoping to escape his traumatic past. Aboard the vessel, he encounters Henry Drax, a brutal harpooner and unrepentant killer whose amorality mirrors the savage world around him. What begins as Sumner's quest for redemption quickly becomes a nightmarish struggle for survival against both the frozen wasteland and a murderous psychopath. Trapped on an ill-fated voyage with no escape, Sumner must confront the darkness within himself and the man who embodies it. The series explores themes of guilt, violence, and the human capacity for cruelty against the bleak backdrop of 19th-century Arctic whaling.
