Freaky Stories(1997)

Freaky Stories is a Canadian animated series that aired on YTV and Canal Famille, hosted by two animatronic puppets: Larry de Bug, a wisecracking cockroach, and Maurice the maggot, his gooey sidekick. Set in Ted's Diner, a retro 1940s establishment run by waitress Rosie, the show spins urban legends and campfire myths into bite-sized tales of the strange and unsettling. Each episode opens and closes with the catchphrase "This is a true story, and it happened to a friend of a friend of mine"—a knowing wink at how these legends spread. Freaky Stories delivers Twilight Zone-style storytelling for younger audiences, shifting animation styles and musical scores throughout each half-hour to maintain viewer engagement. With over 20 distinct visual approaches in the first season alone, the show keeps its tone darkly playful while exploring the folklore that kids swap at sleepovers and around campfires.
