Nachtmeerfahrten is a documentary that explores the concept of the mythic night journey—a hero's descent into the unknown—through the life and work of Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. Jung himself undertook such expeditions into the realm of symbols and archetypes, seeking to understand their meaning for human existence. The film asks how these inner voyages manifest in modern life: Are they perilous? What potential do they hold? What do our shadow selves and inner spirits reveal through dreams and symbols? By tracing Jung's biography and his theories of the unconscious, Nachtmeerfahrten maps the landscape of myth, dream, and psychological symbolism, examining whether the images of our subconscious carry spiritual truths that guide our lives.
