Underground is a documentary about the Weathermen, a militant faction of the Students for a Democratic Society that sought to overthrow the U.S. government during the 1960s and 1970s. Directors Emile de Antonio, Haskell Wexler, and Mary Lampson constructed the film from interviews with group members after they disappeared underground, interwoven with archival footage of anti-war and civil rights demonstrations. The project became itself a target of federal scrutiny when the FBI subpoenaed the filmmakers, attempting to seize footage and extract information that might lead to arrests. Underground captures a turbulent era of radical activism and the government's aggressive response to dissent, offering firsthand accounts from those who lived the movement's most clandestine chapter.
