Das Mädchen aus der Südsee is a German film about an unlikely friendship forged across continents. Hamburg student Richard Kirbach plays chess via shortwave with Arnold Pieper, a coconut planter in the South Seas, and the two men grow unexpectedly close despite their differences. When Pieper worries his headstrong daughter Lale is causing trouble in Europe, he makes Richard an audacious proposition: marry her, sight unseen, for five thousand dollars. Desperate for money, Richard accepts the strange bargain. What follows is a collision of cultures and expectations as the young man meets his mysterious bride, setting the stage for romance and comedy amid misunderstandings and conflicting desires.
