Extremes is a documentary that captures the breadth of 1960s counterculture in Britain, from nude sunbathers at the Isle of Wight to heroin addicts spiraling toward self-destruction. Directors Tony Klinger and Michael Lytton filmed an unflinching cross-section of young people rejecting or rebelling against societal norms—hippies, Hell's Angels, homosexuals, and dropouts speaking candidly about their lives. Shot entirely without rehearsal or arrangement, the film presents raw, unfiltered footage of nonconformist minorities navigating the so-called permissive society. Rather than condemn or celebrate, Extremes simply observes how a generation unable to change the system chose instead to abandon it, documenting their choices with remarkable naturalism and directness.
