Displacements(2006)
Displacements is an experimental film that assembles six rooms created by Dave McKean for filmmaker Chris Petit's project Asylum. Made in collaboration with writer Iain Sinclair, the film documents Petit's process of reshaping, fragmenting, and transforming McKean's constructed spaces into raw material for his own vision. Rather than a conventional narrative, Displacements functions as an abstract exploration of artistic destruction and reconstruction, where each room becomes a canvas for Petit's interventionist approach. The film captures the tension between McKean's initial designs and Petit's willingness to deconstruct them, revealing how constraint and creative abuse can generate unexpected imagery. It's a meditation on collaboration, artistic control, and the spaces between intention and interpretation.
