Sophia: Biography of a Violin Concerto is a classical concert film that traces Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina's path to international recognition through her violin concertos. Gubaidulina achieved prominence relatively late, premiering her first violin concerto, "Offertorium," at age 49 in 1980, written for violinist Gideon Kremer. Twelve years passed before she received a commission from Paul Sacher for a second concerto, and another fifteen before its premiere. Gubaidulina insisted that only German virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter perform the debut of her Second Violin Concerto. Director Jan Schmidt-Garre captures Mutter's complete performance from August 2007, offering an intimate portrait of the composer's artistic vision and the decades of creative evolution that shaped these landmark works.
