Now You See Me, Now You Don’t(1994)

Now You See Me, Now You Don't is a period action film following a feared warlord who hires bodyguards to shield him from constant assassination attempts. Despite his brutal rule, Lei Zhengtian lives in terror of his own wife—a woman whose father granted him his title and who regularly berates and strikes him. After a particularly harsh scolding, Lei seeks refuge at a brothel, but his paranoia about being killed forces him to take extreme precautions. He shaves his beard, dons a black suit, and ventures out in complete disguise. The film explores the contradiction between Lei's public power and his private powerlessness, blending dark comedy with the tension of a man constantly looking over his shoulder.
