Sadko(1994)

Sadko is a film adaptation of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's sweeping opera, told across seven vivid tableaux. The story follows Sadko, a minstrel and seafarer from Novgorod, as he embarks on an epic voyage aboard his ship the Falcon. During his travels, he encounters merchants from India, Scandinavia, and Venice, each singing of their distant homelands. He also meets Volkhova, a sea princess, whose father rules the underwater realm. Sadko's wife Libava awaits his return. In the climax, Sadko discovers that Volkhova has transformed herself into a river, creating a passage to the ocean for his city. Reunited with his wife and believing his journey was merely a dream, Sadko realizes the truth when his merchant fleet sails up the newly formed Volkhova River. The opera concludes with celebration and hymns of gratitude for the miraculous fortune bestowed upon Novgorod.
