The Color of Armenian Land(1969)
The Color of Armenian Land is a wordless documentary debut that explores Armenia's artistic heritage through the silent gestures of post-impressionist painter Martiros Saryan. Director Mikhail Vartanov weaves together biblical landscapes, temple ruins, frescos, and cross-stones with contemporary sculptures by Tchakmakchian and rare footage of modernist painter Minas alongside his work. The film also offers behind-the-scenes glimpses of Sergei Parajanov's landmark film The Color of Pomegranates. Made in the 1970s but virtually unseen for decades, The Color of Armenian Land finally premiered at the Busan International Film Festival, introducing audiences to a unique visual meditation on Armenian culture and artistic tradition.
