Batalives(2018)

Batalives is a documentary that traces the legacy of the Baťa shoe empire across five continents. In the 1920s, Czechoslovak entrepreneurs Tomáš and Jan Antonín Baťa built roughly fifty company towns worldwide, each designed around a distinctive social and architectural vision. Today, only a handful survive. The film visits Zlín in the Czech Republic, Bata-Borovo in Croatia, Batanagar in India, Bataypora in Brazil, and Batadorp in the Netherlands, following residents whose lives remain shaped by this industrial heritage. Through characters like Matea, Shona, Bé, Henrik, and Věra, Batalives examines how a visionary business model has endured—and transformed—nearly a century later, revealing what remains of Baťa's utopian ambition in the modern world.
