Demons is a film that adapts Dostoyevsky's novel into a post-Soviet visual essay. Director Frank Castorf stages the story in an industrial bungalow set against a forbidding landscape, drawing on both Dostoyevsky's "Demons" and Camus' "The Possessed" to explore ideological possession and social upheaval. Shot with the austere aesthetic of Dogme 95, the film transforms the Russian classic into a meditation on political extremism and moral decay in contemporary Europe. Castorf's approach treats the narrative as a panopticon of competing ideologies, where characters become vessels for destructive philosophies. Set designer Bert Neumann's stark, modernist architecture amplifies the claustrophobic tension. The result is a challenging, intellectually demanding work that interrogates how dangerous ideas take root in isolated communities.
