Back Then is a Polish family drama set during the final years of communist rule. Marta, a romantic and struggling student, shares cramped quarters with her sister Kasia and their grandmother, who recounts tales of wartime resistance instead of bedtime stories. Behind the thin walls, her parents Tadek and Elżbieta navigate their own tensions: he's an intelligent man humiliated by the state who brews illegal moonshine and resents his wealthier brother-in-law, while she's a fiery Solidarity union organizer dreaming of escape from Poland. Everything shifts when the family acquires an orange Fiat 126p—their ticket to freedom. As Tadek and Elżbieta discover the thrill of trading and cross-border travel, young Marta experiences her first taste of love. The film captures how one small car becomes a symbol of hope and transformation for a family caught between oppression and possibility.
