Barnabé(1938)
Barnabé is a French comedy about mistaken identity and romantic chaos. When Barnabé, a part-time flutist, arrives to organize a young woman's twentieth birthday celebration, Mme Petit-Durand mistakes him for the Count of Marengo—a wealthy nobleman she's determined to marry off to her daughter. The daughter, however, has already chosen her own suitor and resists her mother's aristocratic ambitions. As the confusion spirals, Barnabé finds himself caught between a scheming mother, a rebellious daughter, and the expectations of high society. The film mines comedy from class differences and the clash between parental authority and personal desire, delivering light-hearted entertainment rooted in the absurdity of the mix-up.
