Breaking Plates(2024)

Breaking Plates is a hybrid documentary, silent film, drama and dance work that bridges a century of female rebellion. Contemporary filmmakers and performers inhabit the lives of revolutionary women from the early 1900s, recreating their physical comedy and anarchic stunts. As modern dancers don period costumes and grapple with vintage contraptions, slapstick gags and explosive choreography, they channel the subversive humour these pioneers used to challenge the systems constraining them. The film merges archival footage with live performance, creating a dialogue between past and present that reveals how comedy became a tool for liberation across generations of women.
